Bowl season kicks off on Friday, Dec. 20 and will run through the national title game on Monday, Jan. 13.

They will both have plenty to prove, in a showdown December 28 in the Fiesta Bowl in Glendale, Ariz. that may be the most anticipated semifinal game in the sixth year of the College Football Playoff era.

The selection committee revealed the pairings Sunday for the national semifinals and the final four was no surprise.

OU will play LSU in the Peach Bowl at Mercedez-Benz Stadium in Atlanta on December 28.

LSU used a convincing victory against Georgia on Saturday to move up.

The Clemson football team finished 13-0 with a dominant 62-17 win over the Virginia Cavaliers in the ACC Championship.

The Tigers are ranked No. 1, and the top-ranked team has never won the national championship in the CFP era. "Okay, so that's history, first time that's happened. No. 1".

"These teams were extremely close", said Mullens, the OR athletic director.

"This is an outstanding group of games we have this year", Football Bowl Association executive director Wright Waters said in a release. Someone had to fill that fourth spot, and the 12-1 Big 12 champion Oklahoma Sooners were the pick.

The intrigue was about the top seed, knowing Clemson was likely locked into No. 3. Clemson earned a 40-35 victory, as the Tigers forced four second-half turnovers, including a fumble and interception on the Buckeyes' last two possessions, to rally from a halftime deficit for the win. The game is perhaps most notorious for an interception by Clemson's Charlie Bauman with two minutes left, in which Bauman picked off an Art Schlichter pass and was punched by Hayes upon running out of bounds on the Ohio State sideline.

Let's be honest about this season's College Football Playoff field: The committee would have created a three-team playoff if that were possible. Ohio State is 5-3 all-time in the Fiesta Bowl.

The game will be a rematch of Clemson's only prior Fiesta Bowl appearance in school history. That was all under coach Urban Meyer.

"Do I feel like we should have been the one seed?" Clemson's head coach isn't going to stop now. The Buckeyes enter the playoff with a 19-game winning streak.

Hurts is in the playoff for the fourth time in his career after transferring from Alabama.
