The world needs a hero.

It wasn't just a big year for heroes in film, Google says. While cricket, politics and movies dominated the minds of people, this year also brought to the forefront people's interest in space science with Chandrayaan 2 emerging in the top three trending searches.

IAF Wing Commander Abhinandan Varthaman was the most searched personality in India, followed by Lata Mangeshkar, Yuvraj Singh, Anand Kumar and Vicky Kaushal.

It was Disney, though, that really captured the 2019 zeitgeist.

Donald Trump to sign executive order protecting students against anti-Semitism
Anti-Semitism is pernicious and risky wherever it appears, including on college campuses. Trump's order reiterates that general sentiment.

It's worth noting that Google doesn't provide the search phrases with the highest search volume overall, but instead offers "the searches that had the highest spike in traffic over a sustained period in 2019 as compared to 2018" to better represent new trends. Yes, Baby Yoda came in above the term "royal baby".

Meanwhile, the top-five trending movies this year were Avengers: Endgame, Joker, Captain Marvel, Toy Store 4 and Aquaman, while the top music tracks were Old Town Road, 7 Rings, Shallow, Señorita and Memories.

People were unsurprisingly fascinated by celebrities-from their deaths (actor Cameron Boyce died from a medical condition and rapper Nipsey Hussle was fatally shot earlier this year) to their missteps (Empire's Jussie Smollett was accused of faking a hate crime, while Lori Loughlin and Felicity Huffman became embroiled in a college admissions scam). Folks also really wanted to know what is Area 51, a VSCO girl, a boomer, and quid pro quo.

According to Google 2019 Year in Search report, netizens in India searched for a variety of topics, seeking information on Article 370, exit poll, black hole and "Howdy Modi" event.
