A stirring late fightback from the U.S. kept Tiger Woods's hot favourites in the contest after the Internationals at one stage held a 6-1 advantage and also led in the remaining three matches.

Woods missed a birdie putt on the first but found his range and he and Thomas raced two-up through five against Hideki Matsuyama and An Byeong-hun, before Internationals incredibly won three in a row to be one-up by the eighth. We got up early then they flipped it on us.

"They (the US) played good at the end there", said global captain Ernie Els.

"Just because we lost the session doesn't mean the Cup's over", warned Woods.

Equally important was Cantlay, who second shot into the par-5 15th set up birdie to square the match against Canada's Adam Hadwin and Joaquin Neimann of Chile.

Woods was asked about the moment as well of course and admitted that even he yelled the same phrase back to Thomas after he sunk the match-winning putt.

The 2018 Australian Open champion and runner-up in last year's World Cup played at nearby Metropolitan club, Ancer said he felt right at home in Australia.

The final match which pitted worldwide pair Im Sung-jae and Cameron Smith against USA duo Rickie Fowler and Gary Woodland was halved.

Playing-captain Tiger Woods has opted to sit out the Saturday fourball round for the United States at the Presidents Cup despite winning two crucial points so far.

The 28-year-old combined with Australia's Marc Leishman to trounce divisive Texan Patrick Reed and Webb Simpson three and two.

"It would be hard for me to go all the sessions", Woods said.

Things began on a similar tone on Friday, with Matt Kuchar and Dustin Johnson losing the opening foursome 3&2 against Adam Scott and Louis Oosthuizen, before Xander Schauffele and Patrick Cantlay defeated Niemann and Adam Hadwin.

That was the first point.

The Americans were prohibitive favorites, with all 12 of their players ranked among the top 23 in the world and the global team having just two such players.

Woods has a good alternative for Thomas, partnering him with Rickie Fowler for Four-Balls.

He said following his first round that the reaction was "exactly what I expected". I think more than anything, it's just getting a feel for this golf course.

Internationals then took control, hitting the lead at the fifth and never relinquishing it to win 3 and 2, with Reed finally responding to barracking from fans, cupping a hand to his ear and making a digging motion with his putter at the 11th. The foursomes will be announced after the first session. Today, we didn't have to do anything.

Take a look at the Day 3 pairings for four-ball below.

Woods's partnership with Thomas also brought the United States their only point on day one but the skipper has made a decision to sit out the Saturday fourballs. That gives both Thomas and Fowler some momentum.
