Shirley Ballas had fellow Strictly Come Dancing judges in hysterics when she praised Kelvin Fletcher's "woodpecker".

Stranded at the bottom of the standings was comedian Chris Ramsey after his Viennese waltz was littered with mistakes and he struggled with the notoriously tricky rumba.

During Saturday night's live semi-final, the last four surviving couples performed two full routines apiece for the first time.

Judges Ballas, Motsi Mabuse and Bruno Tonioli gave Fletcher and Oti Mabuse a standing ovation after they performed a quickstep.

Judges said Karim was the "best dancer" and described his American Smooth to Sweet Caroline with Amy Dowden, 28, as "brilliant".

Ex-Emmerdale star Fletcher, 35, has wowed viewers and judges with his "sensual hip action" and for "oozing masculinity" on the BBC One competition. I love you both, thank you for three months of great dancing and great entertainment.

The comedian added: "I am astounded and I've got to thank Karen, she is just fantastic and is just awesome and so patient it's insane!"

She added: "I can imagine it's hard for people who aren't in this industry".

In the meantime, Karen added: 'This has been a giggle fest.

Ballas told him: "When you did your woodpecker, that was wonderful".

Ramsey, who has become a household name since joining the show, said he is "very proud of myself" to have got so far. "You are an incredible family man who I admire and you are awesome and I appreciated you literally from week one, not knowing how to walk, and now you are a semi finalist and you have made all of us proud and have inspired all of us and I want to thank you for being awesome".

Meanwhile, the remaining three couples will take to the dancefloor next week when Strictly Come Dancing returns for the Grand Final on Saturday 14 December on BBC One.

The former soap star, who played Andy Sugden in the ITV soap for 20 years, is now one of the Grand Final favourites on Strictly, where he has become known for his intimate routines with Oti Mabuse that have left viewers and judges flustered.
