The Los Angeles Times says the buyer of the Chartwell estate is Lachlan Murdoch, co-chairman of News Corp.

Constructed in 1933, the Chartwell Estate was most recently owned by late Univision chairman A. Jerrold Perenchio, who bought the property for almost $14 million in 1986.

A mansion with a starring role in the classic U.S. sitcom "The Beverly Hillbillies" has become California's most expensive property after it reportedly sold for around $150 million.

Classic television watchers may recognize Chartwell from the credits of The Beverly Hillbillies sitcom (it was not used in the actual filming of the 1960s series). Even at the deep discount, Chartwell set a Los Angeles record, and it's the second-highest selling price recorded in the nation. He died in 2017.

Once the residence of late media mogul A. Jerrold Perenchio, the estate centers on a French neoclassical-style chateau of 25,000 square feet (2,323 square meters) that sits on 10 acres (4 hectares) in the Bel Air neighborhood.

The luxury home features a "five-bedroom guest house, a 75-foot pool, a pool house, a tennis court, a auto gallery for 40 vehicles and manicured gardens", and was bought from the late Univision chairman and CEO Jerry Perenchio, who passed away in 2017. The transaction also included the former home of President Ronald Reagan and his wife Nancy, which is based just behind the main estate.

Despite being priced as high as $500 million as a pocket listing, the eldest Murdoch son is said to have sealed the deal for around a cool $215 million, the LA Times reported.

Obscured from the street by walls and hedges, the grounds contain manicured gardens, elaborate fountain features, a tennis court, a 23-metre swimming pool and a pool house.
