Porsche Taycan with disappointing estimate of EPA range hit by 201 miles

After initial Porsche estimates pegged the Taycan Turbo's full-charge range at about 280 miles using the generous WLTP rating, the EPA gave it an official range of 201 miles.

The biggest gulf is between the Taycan Turbo and the long-range version of the Model S, which has an EPA range of 373 miles.

This is the first variant of the Taycan - Porsche's first all-electric vehicle - to receive an estimated range from the EPA. But according to the EPA, that isn't helping its range. While the automaker's electric sedan has passed previous tests with flying colors, its EPA range estimate shows there is at least one area where it has fallen short of expectations. Aside from Tesla, the Jaguar I-Pace is rated for 243 miles of range now.

"We are not disappointed", Marcus Kabel, Porsche's USA spokesman, said in an email. Porsche, not used to being outdone by a cheaper vehicle, is preparing for the all-electric Taycan launch in 2020.

Olivia agreed, adding, "I have to say the same because John talked me into doing it and that was a magical day". I am so grateful, and I am just blown away.

"We sought to build a true Porsche, balancing legendary performance our customers expect of our products with range sufficient to meet their everyday needs", a Porsche spokesperson told TechCrunch.

In the lead up to the Taycan launch in September, Porsche spent a considerable amount of marketing energy, pardon the pun, extolling the sustainable and repeatable power and endurance made possible by the Taycan's 800 volt electrical architecture. From what we can see, the vehicle will be heavily inspired by the Porsche Panamera Sport Turismo especially he back while the front will have all the familiar Taycan design.

When it comes to miles per gallon equivalent, the Taycan is also estimated to be far less efficient with the battery's juice compared to other EVs. Those are far better figures, and certainly lend to Porsche's argument on valuing "real-world range", but at the end of the day, it's the 201-mile figure that'll be on the Taycan's window sticker. The independent automotive research firm came up with a range of 275 miles, a result that was calculated by averaging the vehicle's performance over five test cycles.
