Impossible Foods unveils meatless pork at CES - and it's tasty

"During Impossible Foods' event, I tried out some Impossible Pork Banh Mi, Impossible Pork Char Siu Buns, Impossible Pork Dan Dan Noodles, Impossible Pork Katsu, and Impossible Pork Sweet, Sour and Numbing Meatballs", Lopatto wrote in a review. The company also claims the product should work for various recipes that calls for ground pork, whether you want to fry up some sausage patties for breakfast or caramelize some pork for a rice bowl.

To create a meatless pork product, Impossible's scientists faced a new set of challenges.

The Impossible Sausage Croissan'wich will be available at 139 Burger King locations in five test regions: Savannah, Georgia; Lansing, Michigan; Springfield, Illinois; Albuquerque, New Mexico; and Montgomery, Alabama. Pork is also often a "vehicle for other flavors coming with it: cilantro, shallots, Sichuan peppers", she added.

While veggie burgers have been around for decades, Impossible and Beyond both target the meat-loving majority. Having done quite a bit of research in my own lab, I can safely say Impossible Foods is only trying to replace ground pork right now, and you will not see a bacon replacement from the company anytime soon.

"This is a huge market opportunity for plant-based meat manufacturers, who are starting to look beyond the burger". Impossible's product has become so popular that the brand is having to walk away from potentially lucrative deals, like a partnership with McDonald's, because they can not produce enough supply necessary to work with such a large-scale partner. That statistic, he said, "makes it clear that consumers are in the market for more plant-based meals and brands are listening by beginning to make these more of a menu mainstay".

And the craze is just beginning. The sandwich, which includes a croissant, egg, cheese and Impossible's seasoned plant-based sausage, comes after Dunkin' linked up with Beyond Meat in 2019 for a plant-based sausage breakfast sandwich. The meat industry is vast, he said, and plant-based meats are still only around 1% of sales. I'd be curious to have simpler preparations to really get the underlying taste of the fake pork.
