Microsoft Plans to Improve Windows 10 Driver Updates

Updates for Windows 10 proved more than a little problematic past year, but it wasn't just Microsoft's own updates for the operating system that caused issues - driver updates were often a headache for users too.

Google then goes on to explain that the feature arsenal will remain unchanged on Windows 7 despite the end of support, but also to emphasize that users can easily switch from one device to another thanks to Chrome's support for picking up from where they left off across Windows versions. This means that the company will stop the free technical support and producing "security patches" to fix software vulnerabilities.

Google had previously supported Windows XP, which had a similarly-highly usage rate at the time of its support cessation, for many additional months, giving users some breathing room. Yet US government website traffic suggests almost 20% of visitors who use PCs are still running Windows 7.

"If your PC is running Windows 7, it will no longer receive security updates. So if you haven't started your move to Windows 10 yet, or even if your organization is mid-way through migration, you can still benefit from the enterprise capabilities of Chrome", said Christoff. While the free Windows 10 upgrade officially ended in 2016, it still works.

The decision of deferring the release of drivers marked as needing approval around Patch Tuesdays and Windows 10 Feature updates was taken to ensure the release of "quality drivers, reduce the risk of releasing drivers at the same time as OS changes and provide ecosystem partners a predictable driver release cadence".

"We recommend that you don't install Windows 10 on an older device, as some Windows 7 devices are not compatible with Windows 10 or could experience reduced feature availability".

Google published information about its plans in regards to Windows 7 on the official Chrome Enterprise blog yesterday.

This version of the Store allows companies to offer a curated list of apps to their Windows users, and also to upload custom private apps for only internal consumption. It's the business crowd that Google is considering with its new minimum 18-month extension on Chrome support for Windows 7 PCs.
