Additionally, the vehicle will reportedly be the first among several other electric SUVs and pickup trucks GM plans to bring to market over the next few years.

The manufacturer is now working on two electric programs - one focusing on small and midsize passengers models, and the other exploring full-size and off-road vehicles. In 1999, when the nascent Hummer brand was beginning, GM originally planned on using the name for a GMC product before spinning it out into its own brand completely.

At the moment, the automaker reportedly plans to reinvent the Hummer as a single pickup truck model aimed at off-road enthusiasts.

The report says General Motors will sell the Hummer at GMC dealerships, rather than market it as a standalone brand.

The Hummer started life as a civilian version of the Humvee, the vehicles used by the United States military during the 1989 invasion of Panama and the Gulf war in the early 1990s.

The Hummer brand folded in 2010 following GM's bankruptcy, along with Pontiac and Saturn.

Stats That Stood Out: Vikings-49ers
Former first-round draft picks Nick Bosa (2.0), Arik Armstead, Dee Ford, DeForest Buckner and Solomon Thomas all recorded sacks. That sets up a rematch between the 49ers and the Packers in the NFC Championship Game next Sunday at Levi's Stadium.

GM's chief executive, Mary Barra, has said she wants to pave the way for an "all-electric future" at the vehicle company. If you were waiting for an update on that, then you're in luck: The Wall Street Journal has now confirmed that the rumors are indeed true.

Selling Hummer vehicles in GMC showrooms would mean dealers don't need to invest heavily to adopt the model. The GMC Canyon is related to the Chevrolet Colorado in its underpinnings, while the Sierra models share their platforms with the Chevrolet Silverado 1500 and 2500 variants. Spokesmen for General Motors and GMC declined to comment.

There are no details about the pickup's capability, including electric range or seating capacity.

Hummer started out as a military vehicle supplier but was bought by General Motors in 1998 with a plan to transform it into a Jeep rival.

Today, used examples still fetch good money: close to $30,000 despite having up to or in excess of 200,000km on the odometer.
