General Qassem Soleimani, the commander of Iran's elite foreign paramilitary and espionage service, known as the Quds Force, was killed on Friday when missiles fired by a US drone struck his vehicle as he left Baghdad airport.

Fifty-six % of respondents disapprove of Trump's grasp of the battle with Tehran, whereas 43 % approve and a couple of % skipped answering the query, in line with an ABC Information/Ipsos Ballot.

The request followed a vote by the Iraqi parliament to expel thousands of US troops, a direct effect of a USA drone attackthat killed senior Iranian commander Qasem Soleimani and nine companionsin Baghdad a week ago.

Democrats are calling for more information to be declassified. Sharif said Soleimani had used repressive tactics against the Iranian people, spread fear via the Quds Force, and supported the government of President Bashar al-Assad in Syria.

"At this time, any delegation sent to Iraq would be dedicated to discussing how to best recommit to our strategic partnership - not to discuss troop withdrawal, but our right, appropriate force posture in the Middle East", State Department spokeswoman Morgan Ortagus said in a statement.

But in a response, the State Department said that representatives in Baghdad would not focus on pulling out USA troops.

Iran said the attack was retaliation for the USA strike that killed Soleimani, the architect of its regional security strategy, earlier this week.

Iraq's parliament took a nonbinding vote Sunday urging Abdul Mahdi to expel the coalition.

Pompeo said Tuesday that the "imminence" of the threat to Americans can be demonstrated through Soleimani's actions in the days leading up to his death.

Earlier on Sunday, Iran lambasted Trump after the USA president threatened to hit 52 Iranian sites, including targets important to Iranian culture, if Tehran attacks Americans or US assets in retaliation for Soleimani's death.

In remarks to Fox News on Sunday, Pompeo said Trump had not threatened to target Iranian cultural sites. "Then Soleimani dies and the parliament turned out for his funeral".

Also on Friday, European foreign ministers gathered in Brussels to find ways to ease the precarious situation that has unfolded in the past week.

On Sunday, Iran further distanced itself from the deal, saying it would continue to cooperate with the United Nations nuclear watchdog but would respect no limits to its uranium enrichment work. It said the rollback of its nuclear commitments could be reversed if Washington lifted sanctions on Tehran.

It was Trump's withdrawal of the United States from the deal in 2018 and reimposition of sanctions on Iran that touched off a new spiral of tensions after a brief thaw following the accord.
