Once Again, No Women Were Nominated for Best Director at the Oscars

Also nominated in the best supporting actress category are Scarlett Johansson for Jojo Rabbit, Kathy Bates for Richard Jewell, Laura Dern for Marriage Story and Margot Robbie for Bombshell.

Joker, Todd Phillips's dark exploration of a troubled loner's descent into madness, leads the way in nominations with 11, ahead of 1917, The Irishman and Once Upon A Time... The stunning Jennifer Lawrence was a few months younger than Little Women actress Saoirse Ronan when she won her fourth Oscar nomination.

With only men nominated in the Best Director category, it begs the question: What women could have been nominated? Let's hope next year's nominee list is more with the times. The then 33-year-old made her solo directorial debut with the coming-of-age film, starring Saoirse Ronan, and she was nominated for Best Picture, Best Director and Best Screenplay. Lina Wertmuller was nominated for "Seven Beauties" in 1976, Jane Campion for "The Piano" in 1993, Sofia Coppola for "Lost In Translation" in 2003, Kathryn Bigelow for "The Hurt Locker" in 2009 and Gerwig for "Lady Bird" in 2017. She filmmaker has quickly become a major name in the film world, but she's nonetheless been snubbed by the Film Academy in the Best Director category.

In the history of the Academy Awards, only five female directors have managed to get a nod in the Directing category.

1917's 10 nods include best picture, best director, best original screenplay, best achievement in visual effects and best achievement in sound editing. It's just completely underlining how important this film is, and how the themes are still apparent now.

Saiorse Ronan received a best actress nom and Greta Gerwig was snubbed for best director at the Oscars. I don't know what the answer is, other than we're talking about it.

Writer Jenellicle Riley tweeted, "THE FAREWELL and HUSTLERS were two truly original, excellent and PROFITABLE films both written and directed by women and their total shut-out is discouraging".
