Last week, the British Film Academy was criticized for its nominations' lack of diversity; all best picture contenders were directed by men and not a single person of color was among the nominated actors.

Most glaringly, Jennifer Lopez, long considered a supporting actress front-runner for her performance in "Hustlers", was also denied her first Oscar nomination.

"Parasite", from South Korea, is the sixth film to be nominated for best worldwide film - before this year known as best foreign language film - and for best picture in the same year. You can see John Cho and Issa Rae announce all of the nominees for this year's awards in the video embedded above. Of the nine best picture nominees, only one was released before October.

Industry website Deadline called Monday's nominations "basically #OscarsSoWhite Part 2: #OscarsSoWhiterAndWithMoreMen", referring to a hashtag begun in 2015 in response to the lack of diverse nominees. This is still an institution that almost a century in has only given one woman and zero Black filmmakers a best director win and has still yet to ever give an openly LGBTQ actor (no Jodie Foster and Kevin Spacey do not retroactively count) an award, none of which will change this year.

But in a possible sign of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences' increasingly global outlook, "Parasite" became just the sixth non-English language movie to be nominated for both best foreign-language film and best picture.

Florence Pugh, nominated for best supporting actress in "Little Women", Instagrammed a before and after photo of herself in bed.

Bong Joon Ho's Parasite is the first Korean film ever nominated for an Oscar - and it also makes history by picking up nods in a variety of prestigious categories beyond worldwide film, including best picture, best director and best original screenplay.

"The Irishman" helped Netflix to 24 nominations - the first time it has ever topped the studio count.

Renee Zellweger was nominated for her portrayal of showbiz legend Judy Garland in Judy - for which she also already received a Golden Globe at the beginning of January.

Nominations have been announced in eight categories so far, with the remaining 16 shortlists to follow shortly.

The Oscars will be handed out in Hollywood on February 9.
