Quentin Tarantino's 1960s Tinseltown homage "Once Upon a Time.in Hollywood", Sam Mendes' World War I odyssey "1917" and Martin Scorsese's "The Irishman" each earned 10 nominations, including best picture and director. In addition to these films, "Ford v Ferrari", "Jojo Rabbit", "Little Women", "Marriage Story" and "Parasite" are all competing for Best Picture this year.

Bong Joon Ho's Parasite is the first Korean film ever nominated for an Oscar - and it also makes history by picking up nods in a variety of prestigious categories beyond worldwide film, including best picture, best director and best original screenplay.

The best actor contenders are Antonio Banderas (Pain and Glory), Leonardo DiCaprio (Once Upon a Time... in Hollywood), Adam Driver (Marriage Story), Joaquin Phoenix (Joker) and Jonathan Pryce (The Two Popes).

Notably, The Dark Knight missed out on a Best Picture nomination.

"Congratulations to those men", actress and writer Issa Rae, co-host of the official Oscars nominations announcement, said pointedly as she presented the nominees.

Only one of the 20 acting nominees was a person of colour and that was Cynthia Erivo for her lead role as anti-slavery activist Harriet Tubman in Harriet.

Industry website Deadline called Monday's nominations "basically #OscarsSoWhite Part 2: #OscarsSoWhiterAndWithMoreMen", referring to a hashtag begun in 2015 in response to the lack of diverse nominees. Roma came close to winning a year ago, but missed out to Green Book.

No one was hurt in that attack, which was carried out to avenge the stunning killing of Revolutionary Guard Gen. Iran's president on Tuesday also called for a special court to be set up to probe the incident.

Another controversy is brewing after the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS) failed to nominate any female directors. Though The Irishman didn't net as many nominations as Joker did, it's still in the running for some pretty big awards.

Alongside Joker, Netflix also found itself with a bunch of nominations for The Irishman.

Even last night, after a month of red flags by way of the Golden Globes and the SAG and BAFTA nominations, I felt compelled to argue that the Oscars' push for diversity would result in nominations that saved the season.

Nominations have been announced in eight categories so far, with the remaining 16 shortlists to follow shortly. J.Lo and Awkafina didn't get nominated.

Voting for winners - in which all members can vote in every category - begins January 30, closing five days later.

The Oscars will be handed out in Hollywood on February 9.
