The Spartans, who were 4 1/2-point road favorites, hadn't lost since December 3.

The Boilermakers scored the first five points then seized control with a 12-0 run that gave them a 19-4 lead.

Michigan State never recovered despite trimming the deficit to 37-20 at halftime and 39-27 early in the second half.

MI got out to a fast start and took an early 11-point lead, before the Golden Gophers battled back. "We haven't been consistent enough". The state of MI comes to West Lafayette after winning 8 games in a row and is much more like the favorite who won the Big Ten they started the year with. The slowdown in Winston will be a top priority for Purdue's defense. Someone on the Boilermakers will need to step up for them to beat the Spartans.

The Spartans are once again a top-10 team, while Matt Painter's Boilermakers are off to a disappointing start this season. They're frustrating opponents with the some of the best defense in the country, ranking seventh in opponents' effective field goal percentage (42.2%). But, offensively, they may have found a solution to their woes by divvying up the scoring chores. Time will tell whether coach Matt Painter has a fix - or whether it was merely an aberration.

Michigan State: Committed seven turnovers before forcing the first by the Boilermakers. The Spartans missed their first 10 3-point attempts and were just 2-of-16 in the game. Four of their seven losses have come on the road, and the Boilermakers are 5-3 against the spread at Mackey Arena.

By far the best player on the court, and arguably one of the top three in the nation, Cassius Winston scored 23 points in each game against the Boilermakers last season, which the two schools split. Xavier Tillman finished with eight points and eight rebounds.

The Woodbury, Minn., native's previous career-high was 29 points, to go with 18 rebounds in a double-overtime loss at Purdue on January 2. Evan Boudreaux had 11 points and five rebounds, and Stefanovic and Eric Hunter Jr. each finished with 10 points.

Oturu was also named co-Big Ten player of the week on December 30 after he posted the first 20-point, 20-rebound performance for the Gophers since Tom Kondla in 1966. The Boilermakers have only lost once at home this season and did not lose a single game at Mackey past year. They're 2-3 in the Big Ten, and have dropped two straight contests on the road at IL and #19 MI. "It ain't as much fun as you think it is".
