The Prime Minister says he will take a proposal to establish a royal commission into the bushfire disaster to Cabinet.

"We need to ensure the trauma and mental health needs of our people are supported in a way like we never have before", Morrison was cited as saying.

"I've been in direct contact at senior levels of the United States administration", Mr Morrison said in response to a question from The Courier-Mail.

"But it must be done in consultation with the states and territories".

"We are meeting and beating the emissions targets we set".

Treasurer Josh Frydenberg said the government was seeking balance in its approach, after the PM for the first time said climate policies would "evolve".

"It is with great sadness that we confirm that a Forest Fire Management Firefighter from Parks Victoria has been involved in an incident while working on a fire in the Omeo area resulting in a fatality", said a spokesperson from the SCC confirmed to 9News.

According to political reporter Jane Norman, this is something that the Government has not really committed to before. Another junior lawmaker, Craig Kelly, has also publicly denied any link between climate change and fire crisis.

He said his government accepted that climate change was leading to longer, hotter and drier summers, despite junior government lawmaker George Christensen posting on social media over the weekend that the cause of the latest fires was arson rather than man-made climate change.

Meanwhile, the WWF have opened an Australian appeal also and will be using donations in a similar way to their Amazon appeal.

When asked why he chose to holiday overseas instead of in Australia, Mr Morrison said "the irony of all of this was my original intention was to holiday on the South Coast for two weeks".

Mr Morrison, who was widely criticised for holidaying with his family in Hawaii over Christmas, was warned to "wake up and smell the smoke" on placards.

"They want to see a Federal Government adopt a very direct response to these natural and national disasters", Mr Frydenberg said.

Thousands of people joined climate protests in nine cities across Australia on Friday, according to The Washington Post.

A government source said the representations were made using the strength of the relationship that has been built since Mr Morrison became leader.
