Snow continues for 2nd day in Kashmir, night temp improves

Srinagar received fresh spell on snowfall on Sunday, throwing a white layer of ice on roads, streets and houses.

The plains and upper reaches of the Valley have also received heavy snowfall. They were also seen cleaning their snow-clad vehicles.

Srinagar (Jammu and Kashmir) [India], Jan 13 (ANI): All the flights, to and from Srinagar have been cancelled due to heavy snowfall here on Monday.

Power offer has actually already been disturbed at numerous locations within the Kashmir Valley as a result of snowfall. Sadna Top and Z-gali received about two to three feet of snow since Saturday night.

Meanwhile, the valley remained cut off from rest of the world on the second consecutive day due to the closure of Srinagar-Jammu National Highway.

The MET Office has forecast widespread snowfall across the valley till Monday. Kashmir is now under the grip of "Chillai-Kalan" - the 40-day harshest period of the winter when the chances of snowfall are the highest and the maximum and the minimum temperatures drop considerably. The ski resort of Gulmarg was at minus 5 degrees, while Pahalgam settled at a minimum of minus 2.7 degrees Celsius.

The local residents after the submerging of roads and lanes faced enormous hardships, demanding immediate dewatering of their areas.Deputy Director MeT, Dr. Mukhtar Ahmad said that the Valley including plains as well as higher reaches received fresh snowfall, adding that as per the prediction, there is possibility of improvement in the weather conditions from this (Monday) evening.He said that although the weather would remain mainly dry across Kashmir till January 16, but there is possibility of light snowfall at isolated places during the period as well. In Srinagar, the snowfall was light and continued intermittently.

Many parts of Uttarakhand is also expected to have more rain and snow fall until today afternoon. "Since Sunday morning, Gulmarg received 27 cm of fresh snow". Farmers expecting the moisture and glaciers will be recharged with the fresh snowfall to ensure a bounty of crops season starting later this month.

Moreover, the IMD has a forecast for the cloudy sky and light rain or thunderstorm over the next few days.
