The 2020 Oscars Nominations Yet Again Shut Out Female Directors

Little Women stars have hit out after Greta Gerwig failed to land an Oscar nomination for best director. After reading off the list, nominations presenter Issa Rae, absolutely dripping in sarcasm, quipped: "Congratulations to those men".

The commentary is timely, considering the Oscar's are, once again, being lambasted online for being so white and male.

In addition to Gerwig, filmmaker Lulu Wang, the director of "The Farewell", had been considered to be a contender. The nominees in the Best Director category this year went to Martin Scorcese for The Irishman, Todd Phillips for Joker, Sam Mendes for 1917, Quentin Tarantino for Once Upon a Time In Hollywood and Bong Joon-Ho for Parasite.

Instead, we got another list of virtually all white men, in an identical list to the 2020 Golden Globes' Best Director nominees. When the Academy revealed this year's nominees, many women of color were visibly absent from the list, including Beyonce & Lupita Nyong'o-so we all stand with Issa on calling them out.

No female-directed movies have been nominated within the Best possible Animated Function race both, and just one made it thru within the Best possible Global Function Movie class: "Honeyland", co-directed by means of Tamara Kotevska. Take a look at the total checklist of nominations proper right here.

If not renewed, it opens the door for a motorsport collaboration with Racing Point. Daimler also has a deal to sell engines and technology to Aston.

Other than the categories that are still, archaically, exclusively for women, like Best Actress and Best Supporting Actress, the nominations gear towards the pale, male, and stale. Presenter Issa Rae who gave out the Oscar 2020 nominations make a rather scathing remark congratulating "Those Men" post female directors snub.

The first woman in Academy Awards history to take home the prize did so 82 years after the first Oscar was handed out.

Lina Wertmüller ("Seven Beauties"), Jane Campion ("The Piano"), Sofia Coppola ("Lost in Translation") and Kathryn Bigelow ("The Hurt Locker") were also nominated for best director.

Though Gerwig was, by all accounts, snubbed for Best Director for Little Women this year, she was recognized in 2017 for Lady Bird. The then 33-year-old made her solo directorial debut with the coming-of-age film, starring Saoirse Ronan, and she was nominated for Best Picture, Best Director and Best Screenplay. "Well, you didn't", she said jokingly (but also truthfully). "This film is a testament to the brilliance of Greta Gerwig". All in all, the film was nominated for five awards, though didn't win any.
