Barcelona topped the 2018/2019 earnings table with 840.8 million euros ($937 million), a record 83.5 million euros ahead of Real (757.3 million euros), while Manchester United, the highest-placed British club in third, earned 711.5 million euros (£627.1 million) for 2018-19.

Barcelona lead bitter rivals Real by £73.6m, a record gap between first and second in the history of the Deloitte study.

Tottenham moved up to 8th on the list, their highest place ever.

Deloitte said it expects Tottenham's matchday revenue to soar past €117m (£100m) for the first time next year after a full term in the new 62,062 stadium, which the club occupied for less than half of the season covered in the report.

"Barca are a clear example of a club adapting to changing market conditions, reducing the reliance on broadcast revenue and focusing on growing revenues within its control", he told the Press Association news agency.

"With the club expecting further growth of 30 million euros in commercial revenues and total revenue of nearly 880 million in 2019-20 we expect them to retain the top spot next year".

"What is notable in this edition of the Money League is the apparent continuing emergence of mini-leagues within the Money League, as the largest revenue-generating clubs continue to pull away from the rest".

Liverpool (€604.7m) remained in seventh place, though victory in the Champions League and a runner-up finish in the Premier League last season sparked record revenue growth of 17 per cent, the second-highest growth in the top 20 (after Barcelona).

An indication of how much ground Abu Dhabi-backed City have made up is that they were €200 million adrift of United 10 years ago.

"That will certainly cover this period when Liverpool are having a significant period on the pitch, so we assume there's an opportunity of United shedding that top placement".

"The impact of participation and performance in UEFA club competitions on revenue is evident in London and the northwest, with the rise of Liverpool, Manchester City and Spurs driven by reaching the Champions League knockout stages", said Sam Boor of Deloitte's Sports Business Group.

Deloitte says individual clubs have been able to increase revenues to at multiples of their respective countries GDP growth, by simply participating in their country's national league.
