A source told Us Weekly magazine: "Vanessa and Austin are officially broken up, and Vanessa has been telling those close to her about their breakup".

Representatives for the actors did not immediately return requests for comment.

Hudgens had mentioned that the two had been separated in recent months, as they filmed different projects, and she said the separation was hard.

Butler, meanwhile, hasn't posted a picture with Hudgens since July at the movie premiere for his film Once Upon a Time in Hollywood.

"Happy Halloween from my family to yours", she captioned the snap.

Hudgens is now working on The Princess Switch: Switched Again, and Butler is soon scheduled to film director Baz Luhrmann's take on Elvis Presley.

"It's eight years this year - FaceTime, good communication, respect and trust [are what keep us going]. I am very self-reliant, but it's nice to have a best friend you can share victories with as well as losses".
