Mickelson is doubling as tournament host at the desert pro-am event that has a new title sponsor and name.

"So I have six, eight months to get it done and I've got plenty of time, every bit of fair opportunity to go out and prove myself and play some great golf".

Paul Casey, a member of the PGA Tour's Player Advisory Council which has approved the new regulations, insists it is time for the professionals to take more responsibility in getting around the course in a more acceptable time, although he warned that the changes would not be significant.

"When I stop hitting bombs, I'll play on the Champions Tour", Mickelson said with a grin. I've tried to address a lot of weaknesses and my motivation is back - this is the best I've felt in years, maybe even decades - and physically there's nothing holding me back from playing some of my best golf. Can I get the best out of me again?

For the first time since his first Presidents Cup in 1994, Mickelson failed to make or be picked for a U.S. Presidents Cup or Ryder Cup team.

Mickelson did not do that for most of 2019. "The policy that's in place has not changed and it will not change but there is kind of like a tangent arm to that that's going to help facilitate and I think try to make the game a little bit quicker", said Zach Johnson, who is on the 16-member Player Advisory Council.

He only wants to play in the Ryder Cup if he qualifies.

"I know Phil very, very well", Love said.

"There's a chance that if I do what I expect then I may end up competing for years out here".

"I'm at the point where I've got to earn my spot". There's no reason I couldn't play out here.

"So there's not much he's going to be able to do as a captain because I need to. earn my way on the team". "But if not, you've got to give those spots to some younger guys that haven't had the chance to play and compete the way I have".

The Observation List - Historically, the slow-play policy has focused on groups being out of position.

The Stadium Course at PGA West shares hosting duties with the same venue's Nicklaus Course and La Quinta Country Club over the first three days, before the final round is played at the late Pete Dye's diabolical design.

For now, Mickelson is putting the senior tour on the back burner.

Mickelson, who turns 50 in June, feels that a decision he made years ago to have a greater work ethic and commitment to physical health has left him in no rush to tee it up on the PGA Tour Champions with players he idolised as a child.

FRANCESCO MOLINARI makes his first start of the year as well, the Italian looking to recapture the form that saw him become a fixture in the top-10 of the world rankings after his 2018 Open Championship victory. He grew up about an hour away.
