Sir Alex Ferguson once admitted that he failed to sign Chelsea midfielder Frank Lampard.

However, it is understood United are prioritising midfield as an area to strengthen.

With the ability to pick a pass, the midfielder would excite those ahead of him in attack, especially a player such as Marcus Rashford, who has already scored more goals in this campaign than he has ever before in a single season for United.

" I wish it does not occur, yet we need to begin believing that".

"Where else could I get 200 goals?"

Fernandes would fit perfectly at Manchester United.

Trump lawyers and Democrats preview arguments before impeachment trial
Cornyn said he expected to see essentially the same rules as during the impeachment trial of President Bill Clinton in 1998. A politically motivated impeachment, he added, was the "greatest nightmare" of the country's founders.

While United have refused to comment on their expected approach for the Portugal worldwide it is understood Sporting are braced for Fernandes to be sold to United.

Capped 19 times by the national senior team, Fernandes is in his third season with Sporting.

Despite all opposition, Fernandes stayed with Sporting and continued working where he left off last season. It is a club for which he really want to play. Add in the five goals and three assists he put together in five Europa League group stage games this season, including two goals and two assists in the 4-0 annihilation of PSV in November - a win that secured Sporting's place in the knockout rounds - and you clearly have a player who has mastered the level he is now playing at.

And he has chosen Old Trafford as the place where he wants to leave a mark.

The latest Deloitte report into the richest clubs on the planet has suggested that the Red Devils are "at risk of losing the position as the Premier League's highest revenue generating club for the first time".

The Red Devils wanted to get a player and cash deal for Fernandes, with Marcos Rojo among the stars ready to be used as a makeshift weight, but Sporting wants £ 50m in advance with an additional £ 15m of add-ons.
