United Kingdom to ban sale of gas and diesel cars by 2035

The UK government is changing its plans with regard to banning the sale of diesel and petrol vehicles, after its existing timeline was criticised for being too conservative to meet the overall target of carbon neutrality by 2050.

Edmund King, president of Britain's AA motoring association, said the new target on vehicle sales was incredibly challenging.

"Global scientists are clear that unless we break this trend now and start sustained reduction in global emissions with a clear net zero landing zone by 2050 or shortly afterwards, we will be dealing with unprecedented climate conditions and vast economic and human consequences within decades, not centuries".

A hybrid auto combines a petrol or diesel engine with an electric motor in order to travel under electric power at low speeds.

He added: "We must question whether we will have a sufficient supply of a full cross-section of zero emissions vehicles in less than fifteen years".
