Eminem performed "Lose Yourself" in front of a part-shocked, part-thrilled audience at the 92nd Academy Awards show, a song which saw him win his own Academy Award 17 years earlier.

The 47-year-old rapper stunned the audience at Los Angeles' Dolby Theatre when he stepped out for a rendition of his 2003 Best Song Oscar victor Lose Yourself from his movie 8 Mile. "So he called me, and I recall the telephone kept ringing, and now I am like" Motherf**ker, I'm tryin" to sleep!" "I did? Sh-! Cool!"

He told the outlet that he also remembers being "confused" about why he was up for the Oscar in the first place, and was shocked that he had won, but wasn't necessarily disappointed that he wasn't at the ceremony. "Was really looking forward to handing you the award". Thanks for having me @TheAcademy. "Sorry it took me 18 years to get here", he tweeted with a video clip of Barbra Streisand presenting the award years ago.

The rapper later dispelled rumors that the reason he turned it down was that they asked him to perform a censored version of the song. He said that wasn't the case at all, and the song doesn't have that many curse words in it. In an interview with Variety, Eminem said he never expected to win back then, so he didn't go.

It's estimated that the film will need to gross $250-300 million worldwide to break even. Likewise, the audience score is now at 81%, which also dropped from the movie's release.

According to Variety, Eminem said in 2003, he didn't think it was a good idea to perform "Lose Yourself" at the award show because he had performed it with The Roots a few weeks before during the Grammy's.

I got to see my Uncle Elton tonight at the Oscars. "But then when I found out I won, 'That's crazy!' That to me shows how authentic and real that award is - when you don't show up and you still win". He rehearsed about five times off-site to keep it a secret, he said. He also had the option to cancel if the performance was leaked to the media.

Eminem's appearance came following a montage of some of cinema's most iconic songs and how they can help elevate the films they are featured in.

Not just the audience, the singer revealed that he had a blast performing at the ceremony and the highlight of his night was that he got to hug actress Salma Hayek.
