Hopes coronavirus 'over by April' in China

Earlier, China reported its lowest daily number of new coronavirus cases - 2,015 - for two weeks.

Efforts are gaining pace after China shared the virus' genetic code.

The number of newly reported cases from China has stabilised, said World Health Organization chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus.

"With the deepening of understanding of new coronavirus pneumonia and the accumulation of experience in diagnosis and treatment, in view of the characteristics of the epidemic in Hubei Province".

Also, officials reported 871 new serious cases and 97 more deaths, putting those totals at 8,204, and 1,113, respectively.

Mike Ryan, MD, who directs the WHO's health emergencies program, said the shift is likely to generate even more confirmed cases, likening the case definition change to throwing a wider net with a finer mesh.

The virus - also known as Covid-19 - has spread to at least 24 countries, sickened more than 60,000 people worldwide, with tens of thousands more suspected cases.

The Diamond Princess was placed in quarantine for two weeks upon arriving in Yokohama, south of Tokyo, on February 3, after a man who disembarked in Hong Kong was diagnosed with the virus. Singapore has now reported 50 cases.

Fang Bin, a seller of traditional Chinese clothing, stopped posting videos or responding to calls and messages on Sunday, activists Gao Fei and Hua Yong said, citing Fang's friends.

Anyone who shows symptoms or tests positive for the illness will be immediately hospitalized in a quarantined area.

A Chinese drug manufacturer announced it has begun producing a drug developed by US company Gilead Sciences Ltd. for possible use against the new virus.

The CDC is working closely with the states to correct the issues in the testing kits, Messonnier said. Xinhua reported last week that clinical trials were starting.
