Yorkshire batsman Jonny Bairstow misses the journey to take a break having been a part of the South Africa tour.

England have recalled batsman Keaton Jennings and wicketkeeper Ben Foakes for next month's two-Test tour of Sri Lanka while fast bowler James Anderson remains sidelined with a rib injury, the country's cricket board (ECB) announced on Tuesday.

"That squad is mostly retained, with some tweaks relevant to injury, rest and the challenges of playing in subcontinent conditions".

While Anderson had put himself up for the tour insisting he was fully recovered from his rib injury selectors were evidently not convinced, particularly given the arduous nature of the pitches they are likely to encounter.

With Moeen Ali yet to be persuaded to overturn his self-exclusion, leg-spinner Matt Parkinson maintains his record of having been named in every England squad this winter, backing up the Somerset spin duo of Jack Leach - passed fit following a three-month spell in which he contracted both sepsis and gastroenteritis - and Dom Bess. Root's side will head out in early March for two warm-up games before Tests in Galle and Colombo, with 120 World Test Championship points at stake.

Jennings made the last of his 17 Test appearances against the West Indies 12 months ago, when he was dropped after a lean run of form, while he averaged a modest 30.94 in Division Two of the County Championship past year.

Despite his Test struggles since final 12 months's World Cup, Jos Buttler is certainly one of England's most naturally gifted gamers and he has been given one other likelihood by the choice panel.

"Somerset spinner Jack Leach has recovered from his sickness he picked up in South Africa and is now wholesome and eager to renew his Test profession".

"Jonny Bairstow has actually been in England teams throughout the 3 layouts without a substantial break".

"Moeen Ali is still unavailable for Test selection". This two-Test tour presents a good opportunity for Jonny to be rested.

England Test series against Sri Lanka starting on March 19. "The selectors are in consistent dialogue with Moeen and he remains a valued player in England cricket".

Also missing from the 16-man touring party were the injured Jofra Archer and Rory Burns, but England have included Mark Wood and Stuart Broad, despite some expectations the latter could be rested.

"Jimmy Anderson will continue to work with Lancashire and the European Central Bank to be ready for the start of the County Championship season leading to the West Indies Test series in June".

However, Buttler will have to compete with Foakes for a place in the starting line-up in the two-Test series.

Squad: Root (captain), Bess, Broad, Buttler, Crawley, Curran S, Denly, Foakes, Jennings, Leach, Parkinson, Pope, Sibley, Stokes, Woakes, Wood.
