Facebook Reverses on Paid Political Messages That Aren’t Ads

A Facebook spokesman told Reuters that the Bloomberg campaign was not the only political campaign that had asked about Facebook's policies regarding sponsored content. "We're allowing USA -based political candidates to work with creators to run this content".

The ad library publicly catalogs political ads and allows other campaigns, journalists and watchdog groups to view the type of messages pushed by politicians. After this happens, the posts will be labeled as a "paid partnership" with Bloomberg. Bloomberg's doctor said in December that the former mayor is actually 5 foot, 7 inches, a few inches taller than Trump's claim, according to a letter released by the campaign. These videos would be covered under general disclosure rules, but would not be added to Google's political advertising database.

Facebook said it is asking creators and influencers who were involved in Bloomberg's meme campaign to retroactively apply the branded content tag to applicable posts, adding that these guidelines are in place only in the USA for now as it continues to evolve its policies.

Now, it appears he's turned his attention to Instagram, as The New York Times reports his campaign has begun to reach out to influencers and meme accounts and offered to sponsor posts created to position him as hip and cool.

"Mike Bloomberg 2020 has teamed up with social creators to collaborate with the campaign, including the meme world", Bloomberg campaign spokeswoman Sabrina Singh said in a statement. Bloomberg's campaign told the AP on Thursday that Instagram did noty require the campaign to disclose that information on the sponsored posts it ran earlier this week.

Mount Rainier, Maryland, Mayor Malinda Miles and Birmingham, Alabama, Mayor William Bell are the two other mayors that bring Bloomberg's mayoral endorsements to 111, according to the campaign.
