Khan added: "Unfortunately with the rain that has already fallen, the additional significant rain that Storm Dennis could bring may cause severe flooding in some parts of the United Kingdom".

Dennis is expected to bring rainfall of up to 140mm and winds of 80mph.

Storm Dennis "is likely to bring very heavy rain, flooding and disruption" to several areas of the United Kingdom over the weekend, the Met Office said.

Cllr Humby added: "The forecast is for heavy rain this coming Saturday".

The oncoming storm is expected to be no worse than the recent Storm Ciara.
