Trump attacked Kelly last October, after he said he had warned the president that hiring a "yes man" to replace him would lead to impeachment.

"Some view this as an effort to tie President Trump's hands, it's not really about President Trump", he stated.

Trump then railed against Vindman for saying "terrible things" about his now-infamous July call with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky during his impeachment inquiry testimony. No one, not even the President, is above the law.

Another Republican lawmaker, Senator John Thune, said Trump's killing of Soleimani was justified, calling the war powers resolution "an ill-advised and potentially problematic response to the president's action".

The vote was largely partisan, with only one Republican, Mitt Romney, voting to convict the president for an abuse of power. His incredible wife, Karen, who I have a lot of respect for, once pulled me aside & said strongly that 'John respects you greatly.

Censure would allow the Senate to unite across party lines, as an equal branch of government, to formally denounce the President's actions and hold him accountable. This lengthy saga saw significant displays of political theater as tensions rose between Democrats and Republicans.

Representative Elissa Slotkin, a Democrat who co-sponsored the legislation, said in a House floor speech, "If our loved ones are going to be sent to fight in any protracted war, the president owes the American public a conversation".

Later in the month, a pair of bills limiting Trump's military authority passed the House with some Republican support. "And as part of that we want to make sure that any military action that needs to be authorized is in fact properly authorized by Congress".
