Daytona 500 to offer record purse for drivers, NASCAR says

The 2020 Daytona 500 has Ricky Stenhouse Jr. of JTG Daugherty Racing in the pole position.

Trump awarded him the Presidential Medal of Freedom a year ago, which is the country's highest civilian award. The top-tier racing circuit touted the prize money as the largest purse in the history of American motorsports.

President Donald Trump is out to rev up his appeal with a key voting demographic - NASCAR fans - as he takes in the Daytona 500 on Sunday. "It's a life-changing event for the victor, whose name will join the legends of this sport".

About 100,000 people are expected to attend this year's race and millions more will watch on television. That's because the honor of being crowned the Daytona 500 champion encourages drivers to take even more risks.

NASCAR's unveiling of the Daytona 500 purse marked a reversal of its policy in recent years.

Norman native Christopher Bell will make his NASCAR Cup Series debut driving the No. 95 auto of Levine Family Racing.

A record-setting total purse of $23.6 million is up for grabs in the 62nd annual race from Daytona Beach, Florida. The biggest share of that purse went to 2018 Daytona champion Austin Dillon.

Who could forget the 2001 Daytona 500, when superstar Dale Earnhardt Sr. passed away in a three vehicle crash near the end of the race.

After winning the qualifying race on Thursday night, Joey Logano earned a spot in the second row. The network's Daytona 500 coverage will begin with NASCAR Raceday on FS1 at 11 a.m.

What time does the 2020 Daytona 500 start?

Defending Daytona 500 victor Denny Hamlin will start at the rear of the field for today's race after his vehicle failed multiple inspections Sunday morning.
