Nikita Pearl Waligwa, Actor In Disney’s ‘Queen of Katwe,’ Dies At 15

Nikita Pearl Waligwa, an actress who starred in the 2016 Disney flick, Queen of Katwe, has died aged 15.

Nikita Pearl died at TMR International Hospital in Naalya, in the suburbs of Kampala, on Saturday February 15.

Multiple reports, including media from her native Uganda, state that Waligwa suffered from a brain tumor.

"Queen of Katwe" was the film debut of both Waligwa and Nalwanga. Nikita played the role of Phiona's friend Gloria who explained chess rules to her. David Oyelowo took to Instagram to express his condolence to the family and her friends.

Nikita starred as Gloria, Phiona's best friend who taught her how to play chess. She recovered a year later, only to be diagnosed with another brain tumour in early 2019. "Rest in Perfect Peace dear".

"Nikita Pearl Waligwa was not only a star, but she was also an inspiration to every young girl", read an obituary in the online version of the New Vision, a Ugandan daily newspaper. "May it be well with her soul", Lupita Nyong'o wrote on Instagram.

"You were a darling to many and we have lost you to a brain tumor at such a tender age", the high school said on Twitter.

"We mourn the loss of our handsome Nikita Pearl Waligwa", Oyewolo wrote on Instagram. "Her light will live on".

According to BBC, she had the first tumor in 2016 but Mira Nair, the director of the "Queen of Katwe" movie, mobilized people to fund her treatment in India. Nikita was in S.3.
