Planes carrying American evacuees from virus-hit ship leave Japan

American passengers were to disembark the Diamond Princess and leave Japan on a government-chartered plane Sunday evening to Travis Air Force Base near Fairfield, Calif., according to an email sent to them Saturday by the U.S. Embassy in Tokyo.

At least 44 Americans who were on a now-quarantined cruise ship in Japan have tested positive for COVID-19, according to Dr. Anthony Fauci, director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases at the National Institutes of Health.

Almost 200 Australians are on the ship. There are more than 400 USA citizens on board.

"They should have done this on the very first day", she said, close to tears.

Canadian, Italian, South Korean and Hong Kong passengers were expected to follow soon, after their governments also announced plans to repatriate passengers.

The Health Ministry reported that they are examining the possibility of returning home the Israeli passengers who have not been infected with the virus, through their insurance companies.
