In a single thrilling lap around NASCAR's most storied track, Denny Hamlin and Ryan Newman displayed the risks and rewards of the unsafe sport they both love.

With Ryan Blaney behind him, Newman got turned hit the wall and was hit full speed by Corey LaJoie.

The 42-year-old driver was less than 100 yards from the finish line on the final lap Monday when he was bumped by Ryan Blaney's auto, the New York Times reports.

Newman was taken to the hospital by ambulance after the crash. Like Trump, he also attended the race during a presidential election year.

Emergency crews raced to rescue Newman following the stunning crash. It appeared the entire roll cage created to protect his head had caved.

Denny Hamlin sealed back-to-back victories in an incident-packed Daytona 500 on Monday, winning a photo finish in a race marred by a horrific crash that left veteran driver Ryan Newman seriously injured. Initially unaware of Newman's situation, Hamlin did victory burnouts and celebrated with his team.

"I was focusing on our vehicle, and everybody started celebrating around us", Gibbs said.

NASCAR has avoided fatal crashes since Dale Earnhardt died at the Daytona 500 in 2001, prompting rigourous new safety measures. Earnhardt was the last driver killed in a NASCAR Cup Series race.

The family appreciates the public's patience and privacy during this hard time, and will provide more information at a later time, O'Donnell said.

Budget to go ahead on 11 March
Speaking to the BBC , Grant Shapps noted that the new Chancellor, Rishi Sunak, may need more time to deliver the Budget. Reports emerged earlier this week of a rift between Mr Javid and the prime minister's chief adviser, Dominic Cummings.

"We're just hoping for the best".

During the long wait for an update, President Donald Trump took to Twitter to express his concern.

But just before the checkered flag fell, Blaney made contact with Newman's rear bumper as he tried to shoot low for a last-second pass, sending the No. 6 Ford Mustang spinning into the wall and flipping into the air.

Newman has been a harsh critic of NASCAR's struggles to keep cars on the racing surface, even getting fined for public comments the sanctioning body considered negative.

The race was also marked by President Trump's presence, who became the second president ever after George W. Bush in 2004 to deliver the command for the contestants to start their engines and the first USA leader ever to take a ride in the armored presidential limo, accompanied by the first lady.

Mark Rushbrook, global director of Ford Performance Motorsports, acknowledged the excruciating delay for information on Newman.

Rescue workers rushed to the auto and worked for minutes to get it upright and get Newman out of the vehicle.

Newman's auto flipped several times and crossed the finish line on its roof, engulfed in flames. It's a weird balance of excitement and happiness for yourself, but obviously someone's health and their family is bigger than any win in any sport.

"I knew it was bad", race-winner Hamlin said. "I know that for a lot of us, participating in sports and being in things where there are some risks, in a way, that's what they get excited about". Hamlin, Newman, and Blaney all jockeyed for position with Newman pulling into the lead through the final turn.
