Rangers topple Pageau, Islanders in OT

"I thought we were all pretty close going into it and now I think we're all still close, only better teams", MacLellan said. "It was stressful and I'm glad it's over now and I can focus on my goal, which is winning".

Ottawa did not have its own pick in the fourth or fifth rounds of 2021 but filled those spots with the Namestnikov deal and by sending Ennis to his hometown of Edmonton for a fifth-rounder in 2021.

Meanwhile, the Senators add a third first-round pick to their arsenal for the upcoming draft (unless NY wins in the draft lottery) and now have 14 picks at their disposal.

The Senators received a first-round draft pick in 2020, a second in 2020 and a third in 2022 in exchange for Pageau from the Islanders.

As cool as he sounded discussing the return for his top centre, Dorion added later that informing Pageau he had been traded was "probably the toughest call I've ever made as a general manager".

The Senators, all but out of playoff contention, are not surprisingly selling off assets as part of their plan to rebuild through youth. "We felt we had made good progress on a contract, and at a certain point in time we saw the contract couldn't be done". Pageau got his 41st point, moving him within two of the career high he set in 2015-16.

Leading up to the trade deadline, Chris Kreider was considered the top forward on the market.

Hours later, the Islanders signed Pageau to a six-year extension with an average annual value of US$5 million.

The Vancouver Canucks, meanwhile, acquired goalie Louis Domingue from New Jersey for a conditional seventh-rounder in 2021 in a depth move with starter Jacob Markstrom out with a lower-body injury.

"Here's the thing: I personally think that I should be done with that show, because they make fun of me on it", he said. But as far as everyone else, you know, it's a cutthroat f-ing show.

"[The resiliency] tells me a lot about my team and the group", Trotz said. "I'm not mad at anyone". Pageau and Josh Bailey both went at Trouba, with the newcomer getting there first and trading punches with Trouba before they wrestled to the ground.

He was a Panther from the beginning; the team took him in the third round of the 2011 draft with the 64th overall selection. That has the potential to be the best trade of the year, especially after how Zucker and Crosby have lit it up since being paired together right off the hop. Now he joins a long list of departing veterans, including Mark Stone, Matt Duchene, Erik Karlsson, Kyle Turris and others.

Before the dust settled on that one, Dorion pulled off his biggest trade of the day. "I can tell you I don't get very emotional a lot with players, but today was a very hard call to make with him".

Pageau made his National Hockey League debut during the 2012-13 season. The Rangers are two points behind the 'Canes, each with 62 games played, while Carolina is two points shy of Columbus with three games in hand and three behind the Islanders with the same number of games played. He added 16 points in 35 playoff games, including eight goals and two assists in 2017 when Ottawa made it to Game 7 of the Eastern Conference final.

Namestnikov, who opened this season with the New York Rangers, has 13 goals and 25 points, and joins an injury depleted Avalanche team that now sits second in the Central Division.

"I think the first thing traded players do is look when they face their old team for the first time", said Pageau. "For sure I'm excited that it's next week".

The day started with a fairly underwhelming trade as Vladislav Namestnikov was flipped to the Colorado Avalanche in exchange for a 4th round pick in 2021.

Montreal, which traded sniper Ilya Kovalchuk to Washington on Sunday, dealt Nate Thompson to Philadelphia and fellow forward Nick Cousins to Vegas.

Ottawa (20-30-11) now has the third-worst record in the league.
