Serie A, sports events take a beating from Italy's coronavirus outbreak

Four Serie A games scheduled for the previous round on Sunday were postponed, including Inter's game against Sampdoria at San Siro.

More than 2,500 Juventus fans have been allowed to travel to Lyon for Wednesday's Champions League match despite the concerns.

Serie A president Paolo Dal Pinto sent a letter to the government Monday asking that games no longer be postponed in the affected areas but played without fans in attendance, noting that there is little time for makeup dates, considering that all elite competitions must be completed by May 24 because of the upcoming European Championship.

The government announced on Sunday that all sporting events in two northern regions would be suspended, with Sports Minister Vincenzo Spadafora saying the government had "a duty to be prudent and responsible".

AC Milan also announced the postponement of their women's team's match against Fiorentina on Sunday.

"Uefa is following the situation closely and is contact with the clubs and the authorities concerned", a spokesman said.

They are Zebre's clash with Welsh club Ospreys in Parma, and Irish side Ulster's visit to Treviso-based side Benetton.

"The Federation will continue to work alongside national and local authorities and will cooperate to ensure the application of the correct measures in order to ensure the containment of the epidemiological emergency to protect public health, members and their families", FIR said in a statement.

Eleven towns - 10 in Lombardy and one in neighbouring Veneto - are under lockdown, with some 50,000 residents prohibited from leaving. Across Italy there is a stop to public events, including sports events.

Regional authorities have ordered gathering spots, such as bars, restaurants, cinemas and discos to close.
