Later in her career, the influential woman would go on to open up three popular B. Smith restaurants in New York City, on Long Island, and in Washington, DC.

Smith, who began her career as a model in the 1960s and was the first Black woman to grace the cover of Mademoiselle in 1976, became a lifestyle maven, a businesswoman and a restaurateur with restaurants in NY, as well as, Washington D.C. She has also written three cookbooks, B.

Smith's husband also thanked the physicians and caregivers who assisted his wife through her battle with Alzheimer's disease.

Smith appeared on two episodes of "Mister Rogers' Neighborhood" and later hosted her own weekly, syndicated show, "B".

The devastating verdict: tests indicated she was in the beginning stages of early onset Alzheimer's disease. "It is with great sadness that my daughter Dana and I announce the passing of my wife, Barbara Elaine Smith", Gasby wrote on Facebook.

This year alone, she has come under hot water for tastelessly mocking Joaquin Phoenix's "cleft lip" and saying that gay men should not be able to wear heels.

Gasby added: "Thank you to all the friends and fans who supported B. and our family during her journey". "Thank you to everyone for respecting our privacy during this agonizing time", he wrote.

"I guess you and your mistress can finally celebrate while splitting her fortune". She was found one day later in a cafe in Midtown Manhattan.

Clearly Smith will be missed by many, but it didn't stop some from commenting further on the controversy between Smith, Gasby, and his girlfriend, Alex Lerner.

Smith was diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease in 2013. She moved in with Gasby as he remained caregiver to Smith through her final days.

"I felt we needed ideas that address a new generation, " she once wrote, "one too busy and creative for staid staples such as expensive caterers or gold-leaf calligraphy".

"I believe in the sanctity of marriage", he told The Washington Post previous year, but not in till death do you part. He turned comments off.
