Risk to the USA people from COVID-19 is very low

President Donald Trump told Americans that the risk from coronavirus remained "very low", and placed Vice President Mike Pence in charge of the US response to the looming global health crisis.

"We have quarantined those infected and those at risk".

"We will essentially have a flu shot for this very soon", said Trump.

Trump pointed a finger at his Democratic presidential opponents - not the illness that caused him to summon top officials to the White House for his first briefing with reporters from the White House briefing room.

And during the 57-minute press conference, the President downplayed the risk the virus poses, contradicting his own public health officials.

The decision to appoint Pence and the impromptu briefing seemed to be an acknowledgement by Trump that the threat of the coronavirus poses a critical challenge to his presidency.
