As new virus spreads, Israel issues travel warning for Wuhan, China

During a special government meeting on the Lunar New Year public holiday he told officials China is facing a "grave situation".

It also asked people to wash their hands frequently, cover their mouths when coughing and, if they have respiratory problems, wear a mask.

Tens of millions of Chinese who traveled for the holiday were due to return home this week in the world's largest movement of humanity, raising the risk the virus might spread in crowded trains and planes.

He added that it was likely the number of cases would continue to rise and confirmed that there have been 2,057 cases of coronavirus globally.

The move comes as several other countries are arranging plans to evacuate their personnel and citizens. Chinese President Xi Jinping has warned that the spread of the deadly illness was accelerating.

China is one of Tokyo's biggest trading partners and around 160 Japan-linked companies have offices in the region's central city of Wuhan. That lockdown has expanded to a total of 17 cities with more than 50 million people in the most far-reaching disease-control measures ever imposed.

The infectious disease was discovered from a cluster of pneumonia outbreaks in the central city of Wuhan, China.

Other confirmed cases were in Orange County, California; Washington state; and Chicago. Health experts said that elderly people and those with underlying disorders should be more careful.

Meanwhile, health officials are continuing to track down around 2,000 people who have recently flown into the United Kingdom from Wuhan, the area of China worst affected by the outbreak.

"We have chose to send back all Japanese citizens in Wuhan to Japan if they wish so, by every means, including a chartered flight", Abe said in a press briefing in Tokyo Sunday. The Foreign Ministry said it was working on "eventual options" to evacuate French citizens from Wuhan "who want to leave".

China announced a ban on the temporary sale of bushmeat through which the virus may have been transmitted to humans. Demand for wild animals in Asia, especially China, is hastening the extinction of many species, on top of posing a perennial health threat.
