Harris reportedly first made a decision to cut pay for every non-contracted employee making at least $50,000 before changing it to $70,000.

"Our commitment has been to do our best to keep all of our employees working through this very hard situation", Harris said Tuesday afternoon in a statement.

As Shelburne noted, the Sixers' ownership group, which also owns the New Jersey Devils, has taken measures to cut back salaries for some employees.

But the group changed its mind a day later, telling Wojnarowski that "after listening to our staff and players, it's clear that was the wrong decision".

In a memo sent to the 30 franchises last Friday, the league indicated it plans to pay salaries due on April 1 in full, but acknowledged their future salaries may not be guaranteed if the coronavirus-enforced lockdown stretches longer into the future.

The New York Times initially reported the pay cut for employees.

At-will employees who make more than $50,000 a year have been asked to take pay cuts of up to 20 per cent, starting April 15 through the end of June.

Employees like assistant coaches were asked to participate in this program voluntarily, given how contracted employees can't be forced to tweak their stipulations. Over the course of the year, the large majority of National Basketball Association players receive 24 payments, with the first half of them including a 10 percent escrow tax. According to ESPN, NBA owners and players "are bracing for the possibility of mid-to-late June as a best-case scenario".

There have been at least 50,000 coronavirus cases reported in the US with at least 600 deaths.
