Patient under age of 18 dies from virus in California

During a press conference Tuesday, the director of the LA County Dept. of Health, Barbara Ferrer, announced the first USA coronavirus death of a patient under the age of 18.

The juvenile was from Lancaster. "And that life could be yours", he added.

What they're saying: "COVID-19 does not discriminate by age, race or income level, and what we are seeing in places like NY is indicative of what we should prepare to experience here", Los Angeles County Public Health Director Barbara Ferrer said on Tuesday, emphasizing that residents should practice social distancing.

Multiple studies have found COVID-19 disproportionately affects older patients and those with underlying conditions.

The unidentified minor was the first person under the age of 18 to die from coronavirus in the county. In one case, an infant had a pre-existing intestinal condition. Centers for Disease Control and Control had reported as of March 18 that there had been no deaths from coronavirus among people younger than 19 in the USA, and less than 1% of the deaths were among people between 20 and 54 years old. The other's situation was not known.

According to the Los Angeles County Public Health, there have been 662 confirmed cases of the coronavirus and 11 deaths in the county as of Tuesday.

California has been one of the worst-hit U.S. states during the pandemic. Unfortunately, it continues to spread, even as health and government officials urge people to stay inside of their homes.
