Cascades Humane Society, Jackson Animal Shelter close to public amid coronavirus spread

"Shortly after it became obvious that coronavirus was going to drastically disrupt everyday life, a Facebook group was utilized for animal care workers to brainstorm ideas, share what was working for them, and even to organize transfers of animals", Lavender told GNN.

Beginning Tuesday, potential adopters are asked to visit the Humane Society website to select the animal they are interested in. There are usually around 12 people who work each day.

Donations are always needed to help keep the shelter in business.

"We're talking about things, like providing pet food for people that might not otherwise be able to purchase it because of layoffs or things of that nature", Covey said. The same was true at Animal Adoption Foundation in Butler County, where intakes are being considered on a case-by-case basis.

The Hamilton County SPCA closed to the public March 15 but is still placing animals in foster homes.

While intake is suspended, people can still make appointments to pickup an animal that belongs to them. Officers are still patrolling for strays.

- Lost and Found Services - calls from the public to report lost or found animals.

They've also created a thorough, detailed guide for animal shelters across the country.

The centres, located in Kitchener and Stratford, are being closed until further notice due to the pandemic.
