To show the nation's gratitude for the National Health Service, a national clapping event has been organised in its honour.

Residents in other countries including Spain, France and the Netherlands have already taken part in similar rounds of applause as a token of support for healthcare workers across the world in these tough times.

The "Clap For Our Carers" event is taking place today (Thursday, March 26).

Organisers have called for people to clap every Thursday while the coronavirus outbreak continues. One of those groups are the men and women of the NHS who are working tirelessly to try and protect us, the Great British public.

Ronaldo and Mendes donate €1m to fight Coronavirus
Ronaldo himself is now isolating on his home island of Madeira after several of his Juventus teammates contracted COVID-19. Meanwhile, the wing at the CHUP will allow for the opening of 15 intensive care beds, fully equipped.

At 8pm everyone is being encouraged to stand at their front doors, windows and balconies and give a collective round of applause to honour the NHS staff now working so hard to protect us all.

Radio X presenter Moyles rallied his listeners to "make some noise for the thousands and thousands of people (in the NHS) that we'll probably never meet, just to say "thank you" for everything they are doing for us" with a powerful message.

Thank you so much, NHS. And being a Dutch Londoner, I want to pass this on in the country I feel so at home, and the NHS had been nothing but fantastic to my family and myself!'

In a gesture of thanks to frontline staff, everyone across the United Kingdom was asked to join a mass round of applause from their doorsteps, windows and balconies at 8pm. "I hope you can too".
