Elections Commission Asks Cuomo to Postpone April Primary

Elections officials are asking that no more than two people are inside the office at a time.

Primaries and other elections have been postponed in more than a dozen states so far because of concerns about the coronavirus. Due to limited in-person voting opportunities for the primary election, Nevadans are encouraged to register to vote now and not rely on the same-day registration process. That simply might not be possible in 2020.

"Look, America could be faced with a choice this fall of either Americans being able to vote, which means vote-by-mail, or not voting at all", Mr. Wyden said.

"Senators Klobuchar, Wyden, and I are calling on Congress to include funding to expand vote by mail and early voting in the third stimulus package so Americans across the country can access the ballot box in November", Senator Coons said.

Even though voting is extended, OH officials are observing the February 18 voter registration cut-off date for the March 17 election.

Some election experts are warning the money in the bill isn't enough. Expanding "no-excuse" vote-by-mail is one of the sticking points slowing congressional negotiations over coronavirus funding. And it might bring problems of its own to the process.

Of the 117,120 vote-by-mail applications sent out before last week's primary, 60,812 have been returned as of Tuesday morning, according to figures from the Chicago Board of Election Commissioners. "That is becoming increasingly evident", he wrote. States would need it to put in place the infrastructure and people power needed to support large-scale mail-in voting. Turnout numbers are still being finalized for the March 3, 2020 presidential primary.

Sens. Amy Klobuchar of Minnesota and Ron Wyden of OR partnered with Stand Up America to push for emergency legislation to fund states' efforts to adapt to voters who are now quarantined and learning to social distance.

But elections officials say it's safe to begin voting.

With coronavirus gaining steam in the U.S., Wyden teamed up with Amy Klobuchar, the ranking Democrat on the Senate Rules Committee that oversees voting, to release a new bill a week later on March 18. For example, it added provisions enabling voting on Native American reservations, voting by disabled people, and included a prohibition on internet voting.

"That all the sponsors are Democrats illustrates how the issue has often been perceived as partisan", says the Brookings Institute's Tom Wheeler in a blog post today.
