PM Unveils New Emergency Program For Canadians

American media cited a USA official as saying the Department of Homeland Security did make a "formal request" to the Pentagon for troops to be placed at non-entry points to stop illegal crossings.

She said she had first heard about plans to deploy troops 'a couple of days ago, ' and said Canada had made its position clear to various members of the USA administration.

The newly created benefit for workers whose livelihoods are affected by COVID-19 may be a model for how the federal government helps unemployed Canadians in the future, Employment Minister Carla Qualtrough said Thursday.

"Canada and the US have the longest unmilitarized border in the world".

Trudeau said it is in the best interests of both countries for the border to remain that way.

The head of the United States Border Patrol would coordinate operational use of the military but would not have command over troops.
