PM hits back at Australian Government telling Kiwis to go home

Germany has the third-highest number of backpackers in Australia, with some 19,000 Germans holding such visas.

Currently, 565,000 global students in Australia contribute 32.4 billion dollars to the country's economy, making the sector the third-largest largest export after iron and coal, as well as supporting some 250,000 jobs.

"Temporary visa holders who are unable to support themselves under these arrangements over the next six months are strongly encouraged to return home", Mr Tudge said in a statement.

"Students are encouraged to rely on family support, part time jobs where available and their own finances to sustain themselves in Australia".

Backpacker visas: There are approximately 118,000 people on a backpacker visa who can work for six months for a single employer.

Global students working in aged care, as nurses, and in the major supermarkets, can extend their working hours if they are allowed.

Those who come to the end of their work placement and can not return home will be given assistance to move to a new placement if they agree to meet the agricultural labour demand. Accordingly, these changes include increased flexibility of several regulations to make it easier for worldwide students to continue their studies in Australia, should they wish to do so. The Australian government has introduced new advice to the 2.17 million people in Australia on temporary visas, which includes 672,000 people on the New Zealand-specific 444 visa.

"If they wish for Australia to be in a position to gear up in the aftermath of the outbreak then they will need a workforce to do that and New Zealand make up that workforce".
