NFC Notes: Foles, Trubisky, Bears, Ifedi, Lewis, Giants

The Bears brought in Foles in a trade with the Jacksonville Jaguars, dealing a fourth-round draft selection for the man who guided the Philadelphia Eagles to a victory in Super Bowl 52. But I do want to acknowledge something here, an unknown of sorts: We don't know how Trubisky will handle a legitimate competition. Friday morning, Pace and head coach Matt Nagy met with the media via conference call to discuss the team's recent free agency acquisitions, quarterback Nick Foles and defensive end Robert Quinn, as well as the upcoming National Football League season. "Ultimately, it's about the Chicago Bears". "We've talked to both players and it's an open competition". It's all they can talk up at this point - anything else about his game or past results would've been hot air.

"The quarterback competition becomes such a big thing in the NFL".

Trubisky sat behind Marquise Williams for two and a half seasons before taking over as the Tarheel's QB1 in 2016.

Trubisky was the No. 2 overall pick by the Bears in 2017, a draft that also included Patrick Mahomes and Deshaun Watson.

The thing is, though, there wasn't really a competition in Chapel Hill for the Tarheels' starting gig.

As for Foles, Nagy knows him well, and it was evident how much the Bears' coach appreciates the veteran QB. North Carolina went 11-1 in 2015, Trubisky's third year on campus, with Williams as their guy. Three head coaches have swung and missed with Jameis Winston, though his high-end.

"That success we had as a team with Marquise made it hard for us to pull him out of the lineup", Heckendorf said. "But I think that's part important and they'll be a big part of that".

If Foles doesn't win the job before the season opener, every mistake Trubisky makes will lead to calls for him to be benched.

Of course, if Trubisky were lighting things up in practice and limited game reps, he would've forced UNC's hand. "The way we view this is, it's an open competition". He took over for Glennon because, first and foremost, Glennon was a disaster. They did just that when they acquired Foles from Jacksonville last month.

"When we walk in on the first day, whenever it is, Mitch will be first in the huddle", Nagy said.

But we don't know for sure.

Note: The Bears signed LB Barkevious Mingo and re-signed LB Isaiah Irving to one-year contracts.

The general manager has provided himself with a legitimate Plan B in Foles, who quarterbacked the Eagles to a stunning postseason win over those same Bears in the 2018 season.

That includes an opt-out clause after the 2020 season and $8m guaranteed in 2020.

Pace and coach Matt Nagy have praised the way Trubisky has taken to the challenge of Foles' arrival.

It may not need to be a long look.
