Coach Hansi Flick was handed a new contract by Bayern Munich last month, extending his term until 2023.

Flick was the assistant to Niko Kovac but stepped up to the head coach role when Kovac was sacked in November after poor results culminated in a 5-1 loss to Eintracht Frankfurt.

"Hansi initially took charge for two matches, then until Christmas, then there was an agreement that he'd be our head coach until the end of the season". The safeguarding Bundesliga champs are presently atop the table in the now-suspended 2019-20 period, holding a four-point benefit over Borussia Dortmund.

The club were also in good form in the Champions League, keeping a 100 per cent record and beating Chelsea 3-0 at Stamford Bridge in the first leg of their round-of-16 tie, before the second was postponed.

After that, Flick was assistant to Joachim Low with the German national side.

Bayern will be training in the meantime, though they have asked fans to stay away from the club facilities as the players return to work. "The team has developed very well under him and plays attractive football which is also reflected in the results", Bayern Munich's CEO Karl-Heinz Rummenigge said.

"Hansi knows the mentality of the club, he knows that FC Bayern is measured by maximum success and I'm pleased that we can now develop the club's culture together with him in the coming years". "Bayern Munich trusts him and we are convinced that we will reach our future goals with him".

"From day one when Hansi took over the team, we had a plan for how we would deal with the situation", Salihamidzic said. Football is facing huge challenges. Hansi was a player and later an assistant coach at FC Bayern.

" I am looking ahead to the upcoming jobs with each other with my training team and also the group", Flick included.
