Netflix's quirky 'Tiger King' becomes breakout pandemic hit

Over its launch weekend alone, "Tiger King" brought in an average-minute audience of nearly 2.4 million.

But buzz built quickly for the show, with "Tiger King's" daily average minute audiences jumping to over 1 million by day three; 2 million by day seven; and 4 million by day nine.

"Tiger King", the Netflix Inc. documentary about a big-cat trainer who goes by the name of Joe Exotic, has become the runaway hit of the global pandemic, attracting 34.1 million US viewers in the first 10 days after its release.

According to a report in Variety, Joe Exotic's story showcased in Tiger King witnessed a sluggish start with a 280000 average minute audience on the day of it release which was March 20.

In terms of unique viewers, "Tiger King" reached 34.3 million people over its first 10 days, compared to 31.2 million for "Stranger Things 2" and 36.3 million for "Stranger Things 3".

From March 20-29, it was the No. 1 most-tweeted TV show tracked by Nielsen over that time period, with 1.8 million total organic (nonpaid) interactions on Twitter about "Tiger King".

The docuseries centers on Joseph "Joe Exotic" Maldonado-Passage, proprietor of an Oklahoma roadside zoo who is a "mulleted, gun-toting polygamist and country western singer", per Netflix's description of the docuseries. But things take a dark turn when Carole Baskin, an animal activist and owner of a big cat sanctuary, threatens to put them out of business, stoking a rivalry that eventually leads to Joe's arrest for a murder-for-hire plot and reveals a twisted tale where the only thing more risky than a big cat is its owner. Tiger King ratings may not have skyrocketed the moment the series hit the platform, but by its third day, it was on track to top Netflix's most popular originals.

In the past, Netflix has dismissed Nielsen data as unrepresentative.

He was declared legally dead in 2002 and after Joe alleged Carole killed her husband, True crime network ID have decided to make a new documentary with a focus on Carole and Don.
