Since there's a national shortage of medical face masks, the CDC recommends that we reserve those for healthcare workers and first responders and instead wear cloth face masks when leaving our homes. The WHO, for example, has yet to provide an official opinion on cloth masks but hinted on Wednesday that that could change. If you've figured out where to buy face masks or how to make a face mask at home, you'll want to take the steps below to ensure it stays sanitary. You still need to wash your hands often.

"You see people wearing gloves all day long, but they are still touching everything so it seems like a false sense of security".

"I think it's too late to do a lot for the current epidemic, because it's already spread such a lot, and then the cases that you're getting now are people infected two or three weeks ago". There's no standard method or single answer, so here are a few different ways to wash your face mask at home.

In a press conference on Monday, Canada's top public health doctor said the new advice, a shift from previous instructions, comes from increasing evidence that people with the coronavirus can spread it without knowing they have it. It is important to check that your mask is intact after every wash.

Bring your new fabric mask up to your face and use the hair ties to secure it in place.

As such, it's important to keep in mind to practise social distancing measures and proper hand hygiene, in addition to wearing a face mask if you are displaying any symptoms.

Treat your cloth face coverings as if they're contaminated after wearing and assume your hands are contaminated if they have touched your masks. No word on whether sink laundry is acceptable or not.

The prophylactic use of masks also worked in the favour of the Asian countries in the 2003 Sars virus outbreak. At this time, it's said that the virus can stay in the air as droplets for up to three hours, so even if you're going into a public space where no one is now around, it might not be as safe as it seems.

While wearing a mask protects the wearer and the community, doing so incorrectly or touching the outsides of the mask and then one's nose or mouth makes it useless.

The use of masks made of other materials such as cotton or fabric, also known as non-medical masks, in the community setting has not been well evaluated. It has been suggested that a bandana or a scarf will be effective. Why are multiple layers of a bandana not enough here, when two layers of the plain cotton were fine? Masks also protect the healthy people from inhaling the germs in the environment. "There's no evidence pointing towards one type", said Raina MacIntyre, one of the epidemiologists they talked with.

A new website ( has been created to bring together recommendations and templates for making face masks. Beyond that, we're in uncharted territory.
