More Businesses Allowed To Open Saturday/Tuesday

And on Sunday, May 17, golf courses and marinas will be allowed to open to the public.

The seasonal services allowed to open Saturday for the long weekend include golf courses with clubhouses only open for washrooms and restaurants for take-out.

Private parks and campgrounds may open to enable preparation for the season.

Marinas, boat clubs and public boat launches may also open for recreational use.

The province also announced a new service to help business owners find suppliers of personal protective equipment to keep their workplaces safe.

And, on Tuesday, May 19, the province will officially enter Stage 1 in the reopening of the province.

Premier Doug Ford says stores with street entrances can open on Tuesday if strict social distancing guidelines are met.

Phase one officially begins at 12:01 a.m. Tuesday with the reopening of retailers with street entrances not located in malls, all construction companies, vehicle dealerships, media operations, household cleaning and maintenance companies, veterinarian offices and dog grooming operations.

Golf driving ranges will be able to reopen, and sports that can be played with physical distancing will be allowed, including tennis, track and field, gymnastics, figure skating, and horse racing.

Last week, the Department of Labor said the unemployment rate had risen from 4.4 precent to 14.7 percent. That's three and a half times the total benefits paid previous year , state officials said Wednesday.

Vets and other pet services, such as pet grooming by appointment only, animal shelters, household services such as cleaning and maintenance, certain health and medical services, including scheduled surgeries and in person counselling. She said almost every long-term care home resident and worker has now been tested, so testing will expand to other vulnerable populations, including people in retirement homes, shelters and group homes. "We have the framework, safety guidelines and capacity in our healthcare system".

He adds "We need to keep in mind that all of this is depended on the numbers".

He will be joined by Christine Elliott, Deputy Premier and Minister of Health, Rod Phillips, Minister of Finance, Vic Fedeli, Minister of Economic Development, Job Creation and Trade, and Monte McNaughton, Minister of Labour, Training and Skills Development, to make an announcement.

All construction projects can move forward.

According to Elliott, anyone in Ontario with coronavirus symptoms can now be tested.

The minister said the expansion is due to the near completion of testing at all long-term care homes. The province reported 258 additional cases, the fewest new cases in a single day since March 29.

The province said it will be providing an update on school closures and child care early next week.

Meanwhile, Premier Doug Ford is expected to provide more details today on the first stage of Ontario's reopening plan at his 1 p.m. ET briefing. The province plans to reassess for two to four weeks after each stage before moving onto the next. The province is seeing an overall downward trend in new cases, but if public health indicators do not continue in the right direction, the reopening plan could be put on hold, Ford said.

Over the weekend, garden centres, nurseries, hardware stores and safety supply stores began offering in-store purchasing.
