Covid impact: Air fares on domestic flights to be capped

Passengers will only be allowed to obtain boarding pass through web check-in.

Passengers should also be wearing a mask from the time they enter the airport till they complete their journey.

Passengers will have to update their Aarogya Setu App status to declare they are free of any COVID-19 symptom.

Airlines including IndiGo, the country's largest carrier by market share, its rival SpiceJet Ltd, full-service carrier Vistara, a joint venture between Tata Sons and Singapore Airlines and state-run Air India were forced to ground planes from March 25.

The letter undersigned by Usha Padhee, Joint Secretary, Ministry of Civil Aviation, said that the air space will be opened for domestic travel after two months with several safeguards in place to prevent the spread of the deadly novel coronavirus.

The ministry however said that the final guidelines would be issued later during the day.

Earlier, on Wednesday, Civil Aviation Minister Hardeep Singh Puri tweeted that domestic flights will start to operate "in a calibrated manner" from 25 May.

The civil aviation ministry has divided passenger guidelines into four parts, according to various stages of travel which include, origin to airport, at the airport, in the aircraft, and from airport to destination.

"On flights through May 31, American will limit the number of passengers on each aircraft", they said. The state has allowed standalone shops outside containment zones to reopen from Thursday if they comply with all social distancing guidelines.

As for passengers, those who are more vulnerable to contracting COVID-19, such as pregnant women, elderly persons, patients suffering from other severe health issues, have been advised against travelling. No food and beverages will be served during flights and passengers are not allowed to eat or drink.

In the Standard Operation Procedure (SOP), the Airports Authority of India has advised passengers to reach the airport 2 hours prior to departure.

Social distancing on airplanes has become a topic of debate as airlines look to revive passenger numbers while ensuring safety for both travellers and workers.

The European Commission last week proposed airlines and airports require passengers to wear masks, and reorganise check-ins, dropoffs and luggage pickups to avoid crowds.
